In case you missed it, this letter was printed in last week’s LBO.

“Still waiting for a thank you”

“I am hoping through your paper I can make contact with Leighton Buzzard Young Farmers Club. On May 21 I found a fleece on the South Downs Way at Pyecombe, West Sussex. On the back was the letters LBYFC Rally 2012. Using the internet I managed to confirm through their website what the letters LBYFC represented. The website gave the phone number of the secretary and I left a message on the voicemail with a request for someone to phone me. Nobody has to this day. Back to the website and phoned the chairman who answered. I mentioned that large numbers of young people were hiking on The South Down on May 19/20 as part of The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. Immediately the chairman said “I know who the owner will be”. The chairman gave me his own address and I posted the article to him with my details. No response or a thank you from anyone which does not say a lot for the young people of your local YFC. I do hope it reached the owner.”

We didn’t think this showed us in a very good light so I wrote this reply:

“Reply from LBYFC to Chris Daughton”
“Chris, Firstly I would like to thank you for your assistance in this matter, as a small part of a national organisation we rely on people like yourself to contribute to the running of our club. I am very grateful that someone would take the time to research us on the internet and make the necessary phone calls to reunite shirt and owner; I have been told that you have not yet been reimbursed for your trouble so please contact us at lbyfc13@gmail.co.uk and we shall do so. LBYFC is a club run by the members for the members; everyone involved is aged between 10 and 26 and is either in education or has a full time job most of who are kept on the farm for some very long hours. As a club we recently hosted the annual Bedfordshire Young Farmers county rally which had over 3000 people attend, all of whom I hoped enjoyed the day. With a varied selection of competitions from Handicrafts to Show Jumping it meant there was truly something for everyone.”
“The fleece in question did arrive last Friday (14th June) which meant there would have been no way for us to reply to you before the deadline for this paper’s letter section, it has not even been opened yet. At the following club meeting (20th) it was planned to be delivered where I have no doubt that a thank you letter would have been sent your way with reimbursement. Our club has been established since 1934 and is one of 7 in Bedfordshire which has 413 members who meet regularly to take part in social events, educational meetings and charity work which is all undertaken in our spare time. I do hope this experience has not tainted your view of Young Farmer’s Clubs. Sincerely.”
